Who is qualified to be a volunteer ?
Volunteers come from all walks of life, all economic and educational backgrounds.
Volunteers have one thing in common; a commitment to ensuring that the child welfare system protects children, creates permanency and maximzes the child’s well-being.
What do volunteers do?
Volunteers serve on boards in their local community.
The board reviews individual cases of children in the foster care system. After hearing from interested parties that are involved in the child’s case the board makes recommendations that are sent to the Judge who is hearing the case.
Where and When do the boards meet?
Each board meets once a month on a regular weekday.
The reviews are held at the local Children, Youth and Families Department Office. (See list of where CRB meets in your community).
What are the expectations of a board member?
Commitment to one weekday per month for the board meeting, remaining for the entire schedule of cases..
A few hours preparation/reading (at your leisure/in your home) prior to the board meeting to review case materials.
Confidentiality regarding the cases reviewed (please do not discuss any cases with any one outside the CRB process)
Attend required training.
New Members Training is offered three times a year in Albuquerque. New members have a year to complete this training. Mileage to training is paid and if distance warrants, motel rooms will be provided.
On going members are required to complete ten units of training each year. Training is done through training modules done at home, books, videos – local , regional and statewide trainings
Fairness, objectivity and the ability to make impartial recommendations regarding a child’s future.
